Root Cause
China is overwhelmingly cashless via WeChat Pay (微信支付) and Alipay (支付宝); Visa/Mastercard rarely accepted outside top-tier hotels and airports. Since 2023 the PBOC opened tourist-friendly setup: foreign Visa/Mastercard can fund Alipay (with 200 USD limit per single transaction, 5000 USD/year), WeChat Pay (with foreign-card-tied bind, similar caps). Cash is increasingly refused even for taxi fares; some shops have no working POS terminal.
genericWorkarounds
-
92% success Pre-trip: install WeChat + Alipay. Verify identity with passport. Bind a Visa or Mastercard. Carry small RMB cash (~500 RMB) for backup. Register both apps — some merchants take only one.
-
70% success For >5,000 USD/year spend: open a Chinese bank account (requires multi-day stay + visa + tax paperwork) OR use UnionPay-issued cards from your home country (BoC America, ICBC USA branches) which are treated as 'domestic' and uncapped.

-
85% success Major hotels (Shangri-La, Hyatt), airport shops, and metro stations accept Visa. Use them as cash-out points if WeChat/Alipay fails. Some metros (Shanghai, Beijing) accept foreign contactless cards directly.

Dead Ends
Common approaches that don't work:
-
Plan a China trip with the assumption that 'I'll just use Visa and pay cash as backup'
78% fail
Many small shops, food stalls, taxi drivers, and rural vendors have NO POS terminal — payment by Visa is impossible. Cash is increasingly refused; vendors say 没有零钱 (no change) and refuse the bill. The People's Bank of China has explicitly required vendors to accept cash but enforcement is weak. WeChat/Alipay is genuinely default.
-
Try to register WeChat Pay or Alipay only after arriving in China
60% fail
Both apps require SMS verification — a Chinese phone number works best, but foreign numbers can register since 2023. The first transaction often triggers identity verification (passport + selfie), which works inconsistently from inside China. Setting up before arrival is much smoother.
-
Top up a Chinese-resident-style WeChat Pay balance with foreign Visa, expecting unlimited spend
70% fail
Foreign-card spend is capped: 200 USD per transaction, 5,000 USD per year per app. Larger purchases (laptops, designer goods) require resident-status payment. This is a 2023 PBOC tourist initiative cap.
