Failing to tip 18-22% at sit-down restaurants effectively underpays the server. Some states (CA, NV, WA, OR) require full minimum wage regardless of tips; even there, tipping norms remain. Counter service (Starbucks-style) is more flexible. Hotels, taxis, hairdressers, food delivery all expect tips. Post-COVID 'tipflation' has pushed prompts to many new contexts.
