Root Cause
Since 14 September 2023 the Servicio Geologico Colombiano (SGC) replaced its old 'activity level' scheme with four 'alert states' (verde, amarillo, naranja, rojo) that deliberately drop any days/weeks/hours eruption-timing claim that the old orange level used to carry. Orange now means significantly elevated activity and higher probability, without a promised timeframe; red means an eruption is already in progress. The SGC has publicly stressed that volcanoes do not necessarily escalate level by level - Nevado del Huila erupted within about 21 hours of dormancy in 2007 - so an eruption can occur even from a lower alert state.
