Root Cause
UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) rolled out for Gulf nationals 2023, then non-EU visa-waiver travelers (US, CA, AU, NZ, JP, KR, SG, etc.) Jan 2025, and EU/EEA/CH from 2 Apr 2025. £16 fee, valid 2 years, multiple entries up to 6 months each. Apply via UK ETA app or gov.uk before boarding. Different from Schengen ETIAS (separate program for EU). Irish citizens exempt. Some transit-only routes exempt at LHR / MAN.

Dead Ends
Common approaches that don't work:
-
Tell a US/EU traveler they can fly to UK in 2025+ without checking ETA status
92% fail
From Jan 2025 (non-EU non-Irish) and Apr 2025 (EU/EEA/CH), most visa-waiver nationals must hold approved ETA before boarding. Airlines deny boarding without ETA Status. Last-minute applications can take 3+ days during peak.
-
Confuse UK ETA with Schengen ETIAS (EU)
60% fail
UK is not in Schengen. UK ETA = UK only, £16, via gov.uk. Schengen ETIAS = EU/Schengen area, €7, via travel-europe.europa.eu. Both are pre-travel; both required separately for trips that touch both areas.
-
Apply for UK ETA at the airport on arrival day
85% fail
Apply via app or gov.uk before boarding. Most approvals within minutes; some require manual review (24-72h). Airlines won't board without approved ETA. Apply 3+ days ahead minimum.
