Root Cause
Taiwan's visa-exempt stay is not extendable, and the National Immigration Agency explicitly refuses extension applications from visa-exempt entrants. British and Canadian passport holders are the single exception: a one-off 90-day extension to 180 days total, granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a visitor visa - not by NIA - applied for within 30 days before the 90-day stay expires, free of charge. No second extension and no change of purpose.
